Big Clashes in Europe this Week
The CL returns with some massive matches this week, including Arsenal – Atlético Madrid and a tough away fixture in Frankfurt for a struggling Liverpool side. Let’s take a closer look at some of this week’s highlights in the European competition!
Arsenal – Atlético Madrid
Emirates Stadium, Tuesday @ 21:00 CET
Arsenal
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Athletic – Arsenal: 0-2
Matchday 2: Arsenal – Olympiacos 2-0
Arsenal, current odds favourites to win the PL, are chasing their 3rd win in a row in the CL league phase this season, with Atlético Madrid their next opponent. The English side might be missing their captain, but they’ve proved less dependent on individuals this season after having made some seemingly smart signings over the summer.
The Gunners have yet to concede in the CL this campaign, having won both of their two matches so far 2-0, and Arteta will be hoping to see his team continue shutting things down in defense. Goalkeeper Raya will most likely have Saliba and Magalhaes in front of him, with Ben White and Lewis-Skelly hoping to grab the fullback positions, though Calafiori and Timber have been the first choices so far this season.
Arteta have plenty of options in midfield, with Rice, Zubimendi, Merino and Eze all potential starters. Will the Spanish manager rotate a bit here considering they also have a tough London derby against Crystal Palace coming up this weekend? Gyökeres will most likely start up front, with Saka and Trossard potential partners in the attacking trio. Arsenal will go into this match full of confidence after their impressive start to the season, and it’s no wonder they are odds favourites against an Atlético Madrid team that have failed to beat any English team away from home in the group or league phase of the CL.
The odds of an Arsenal win here is at 1.58, with under 1.5 goals at 3.65.
Atlético Madrid
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Liverpool – Atlético Madrid 3-2
Matchday 2: Atlético Madrid – Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1
Diego Simeone’s team have had a difficult start to the season, and they’re already 8 points behind their city rivals in the Spanish league. Despite having lost only one league match so far, their 4 draws have left their fans disappointed. A loss against Liverpool away in the CL is almost to be expected, and there have been positive signs lately, including their incredible 5-2 win over Real Madrid and a 5-1 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt in the CL.
The away supporters will be hoping to see Julián Alvarez in goalscoring form, with the Argentinian on 13 goals in 11 matches in the CL since the start of 2023/24. Griezmann and Raspadori are also a danger in attack, but Arsenal’s defense have been extremely solid this season, and Simeone’s team will have to be at their best if they are to get a result in London.
A win for Atlético Madrid currently stands at 5.90, with both teams to score at 1.92.
Real Madrid – Juventus
Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Wednesday @ 21:00
Real Madrid
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Real Madrid – Marseille: 2-1
Matchday 2: Kairat – Real Madrid: 0-5
While Real Madrid’s city rivals are away at Arsenal, Xabi Alonso’s men host Juventus hoping to grab their 3rd win in three matches so far in the CL. The Spaniards are clear favourites at 1.49, though they do miss a few players for this match, including Rudiger, Carvajal and Huijsen. Alonso will be hoping to see some magic up front from Mbappe, with a goal from the French striker currently at 3.60.
In defense, Real Madrid will be hoping to see Courtois keep the Juventus strikers at bay, with Militao and Asencio a likely pairing in central defense. A win here would be the perfect lead-up to this weekend’s ‘El Clasico’ in the Spanish capital.
Juventus
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Juventus – Borussia Dortmund: 4-4
Matchday 2: Villarreal – Juventus: 2-2
After two draws in their first 2 CL matches, an away match at Real Madrid was probably not what Juventus would have wanted. The Turin side lost 0-2 to Como this weekend and are 7th in the league, having only won 3 of their first 7 matches. Conceicao and Yildiz are expected to start, with Vlahovic and David hoping to grab a spot in the starting line-up as well. Defensively, the Italians will be hoping for a big match from Di Gregorio, who is expected to be kept busy Wednesday evening.
There have certainly been bigger surprises in football lately than a Juventus win away at Real Madrid, but their price at 6.30 says it all here – an away win in Madrid would be a massive upset.
Eintracht Frankfurt – Liverpool
Deutsche Bank Park, Wednesday @ 21:00
Eintracht Frankfurt
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Eintracht Frankfurt – Galatasaray: 5-1
Matchday 2: Atlético Madrid – Eintracht Frankfurt: 1-5
Eintracht Frankfurt, led by 44-year-old Dino Toppmöller, have had an interesting start to the season, lingering just below the European spots in Germany. Only 10 points from their opening seven matches is certainly not what the supporters were hoping for, and their 1-5 loss to Atlético Madrid in the CL was hard to swallow. There have certainly been some ups this season as well, though, most notably the 5-1 thrashing of Galatasaray in their opening CL match and a 6-4 win away at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Their defensive record this season is worrisome, though, and especially if Liverpool come to Germany hungry to turn things around after a few disappointing weeks. The Germans are massive underdogs in this one, with their price currently at 5.00, despite playing at home. One positive is that Toppmöller is coming into this match with a pretty much full squad, but will that be enough against a Liverpool side desperate to get back to winning ways?
Liverpool
Results so far:
Matchday 1: Liverpool – Atlético Madrid: 3-2
Matchday 2: Galatasaray – Liverpool: 1-0
Harry Maguire caused further problems for Arne Slot and Liverpool over the weekend with a late winner in Liverpool, meaning the Reds have now suffered 4 straight defeats (in all competitions). Despite this, a win here would put them back in a good position in the CL, having beaten Atlético Madrid in their opening fixture before their surprise defeat at Galatasaray.
Slot will have to make do without Alisson, but the squad is more than strong enough here to grab a win away against an Eintracht Frankfurt team that have struggled to find consistency this season. Liverpool are currently odds favourites to win at 1.58, with over 4.5 goals at 3.10.
Can Liverpool finally end their winless streak here?
