A Familiar CL Rivalry in Madrid
Do you feel like you’re watching Real Madrid vs Manchester City every season? That impression is not entirely misleading. The clubs have already faced each other 15 times previously, and this matchup also marks the first time in CL history that two teams meet in the knockout stage for five consecutive seasons. Both sides approach tonight’s massive CL tie with ambitions of going deep in the competition. Real Madrid are chasing their 16th European Cup, while Manchester City aim to continue their European progress under Pep Guardiola.
Analysis
Real Madrid’s path to the knockout stage was more complicated than they are used to. The Spanish giants finished 9th in the league phase, just one point behind Manchester City, after losing three of their final five matches at that stage.
As a result, Madrid had to go through the playoff round, where they advanced 3–1 on aggregate against Benfica. That progression means the club has now reached the CL round of 16 for 23 consecutive seasons since the format was introduced in 2003–04.
Results in La Liga have been somewhat inconsistent of late. A surprising 1–0 defeat to Getafe was followed by a dramatic 2–1 away win against Celta Vigo, where captain Federico Valverde scored the winner in the 95th minute. With 11 league games remaining, Real Madrid sit four points behind leaders Barcelona.
At home in the CL, however, the Santiago Bernabéu has remained a stronghold. Real Madrid have won four of their five home matches in the competition this season, scoring 12 goals. The only defeat came against Manchester City, who secured a 2–1 win in Madrid during the league phase.
Historically, Real Madrid are still formidable in European home matches. They have lost only three of their last 25 CL games at the Bernabéu, and they have progressed from 13 of the last 15 round-of-16 ties they have played.
Manchester City reached the knockout stage in more comfortable fashion this season. After finishing 22nd in last year’s league phase and being eliminated by Real Madrid in the playoff round, Guardiola’s side collected 16 points from eight matches this time to qualify directly for the round of 16.
Along the way, City defeated Real Madrid, Napoli, Villarreal, Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray, beating the latter 2–0 at home on the final matchday of the league phase.
Since that victory at the end of January, City have maintained solid domestic form. The team have won seven of their last nine matches, drawing the other two. A 2–2 PL draw at home to Nottingham Forest left them seven points behind Arsenal in the title race. However, they responded by beating Newcastle 3–1 in the cup at the weekend.
Wednesday’s match will also represent a milestone for Pep Guardiola, as it will be his 190th CL game as a manager, drawing level with Sir Alex Ferguson’s record.
City’s recent away record in the competition has been somewhat inconsistent. They have won just two of their last eight away matches in the CL. Historically, they have also struggled in two-legged ties against Spanish teams, losing seven of their last ten such encounters.
On the other hand, City have generally performed well against Spanish opposition in recent years, suffering only three defeats in their last 18 UEFA matches against clubs from Spain.
Team News
Real Madrid will be without several key players. Kylian Mbappé (knee) and Jude Bellingham (hamstring) are expected to miss the match. In addition, Rodrygo (ACL), Éder Militão (hamstring), Dani Ceballos and Álvaro Carreras (calf) are unavailable.
Eduardo Camavinga and David Alaba are also doubts and will be assessed before kick-off. Dean Huijsen and Franco Mastantuono are available again after suspensions, although neither is expected to start.
If Camavinga is fit, he could join Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni in midfield. Arda Güler is another option either centrally or on the right side.
In attack, Vinícius Junior is expected to start on the left flank. The Brazilian has not scored in his last six matches against Manchester City, but 12 of his last 13 CL goals have come in the second half. Either Gonzalo García or former City player Brahim Díaz could lead the line.
Manchester City have fewer injury concerns. Joško Gvardiol (tibia) and Mateo Kovačić (ankle/heel) are the only confirmed absentees.
City rested their star striker for their cup match against Newcastle, but he is expected to return to the starting lineup. Their powerful striker has scored 56 goals in 56 CL appearances, including 10 goals in his last 10 matches against Spanish opposition in the competition.
Defensively, Matheus Nunes may continue at right-back alongside Rúben Dias, Marc Guéhi and Rayan Aït-Nouri. In midfield, Rodri, Nico O’Reilly and Bernardo Silva appear the most likely trio.
Guardiola also has several attacking options. Omar Marmoush scored twice against Newcastle, while Savinho also found the net. Meanwhile Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku are competing for starting places as well.
Verdict and Betting Angle
Real Madrid are always a formidable opponent in the CL, particularly at the Bernabéu. However, the absence of Mbappé and Bellingham significantly reduces their attacking strength.
Manchester City have already won in Madrid earlier this season and arrive in good form. If Guardiola’s team find their attacking rhythm, they could take a valuable advantage into the second leg.
Tip: Manchester City win at 2.05.
