Club WC 25 Preview – The Quarter-Finals

There has been plenty of drama so far in the Club WC, and the quarter-finals are looking very intriguing as well. We’ve got two all-European fixtures coming up, a clash between Fluminense and Al-Hilal, as well as Chelsea against Palmeiras. Let’s take a closer look at the quarter-finals!

The Club WC is entering the quarter-finals stage and several big teams, including Man City and Juventus, are already out. Will one of the outsiders manage to go all the way here, or will one of the favourites lift the trophy on July 13? Let’s take a closer look at the four quarter-finals!

Fluminense vs. Al-Hilal

Camping World Stadium, Friday @ 21:00 CET

Fluminense

Results so far:
Group Stage: Fluminense – Borussia Dortmund: 0-0
Group Stage: Fluminense – Ulsan: 4-2
Group Stage: Mamelodi Sundowns – Fluminense: 0-0
Round of 16: Inter – Fluminense: 0-2

The Brazilian outfit has impressed so far at the Club WC, and they’re still undefeated having managed a draw against Borussia Dortmund, also a quarter-finalist. This game takes place in Orlando, where Fluminense will have to make do without Rene, who is out with a suspension. Martinelli is also an injury doubt for this one.

Having already knocked CL finalists Inter out of the tournament, the Brazilians will go into this match full of confidence of getting a results that will see them through to the semi-finals.

Al-Hilal

Results so far:
Group Stage: Real Madrid – Al-Hilal: 1-1
Group Stage: RB Salzburg – Al-Hilal: 0-0
Group Stage: Al-Hilal – Pachuca: 2-0
Round of 16: Man City – Al-Hilal: 3-4

The Saudi club caught many football fans off guard when they drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in their opening match, and they’re still undefeated in the tournament so far. A very strong 4-3 win over Man City proves that this is a side that has the potential to create an upset, even against the strongest of teams.

Mitrovic is out of the match squad due to injury, and the Al-Hilal fans will be hoping to see Marcos Leonardo continue where he left off against Man City, a game in which he scored a brace.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of the next match we’ll take a look at, Palmeiras – Chelsea.

Palmeiras vs. Chelsea

Lincoln Financial Field, Saturday @ 03:00

Palmeiras

Results so far:
Group Stage: Palmeiras – Porto: 0-0
Group Stage: Palmeiras – Al Ahly: 2-0
Group Stage: Inter Miami – Palmeiras: 2-2
Round of 16: Palmeiras – Botafogo: 1-0

Two draws and a win was enough to secure a place in the Round of 16 for Palmeiras, where they got the better of their Brazilian rivals Botafogo. Chelsea is their next opponent, and Palmeiras will be hoping for revenge after their loss in the final of this competition (albeit in a smaller format) in 2022, with Havertz scoring the winner.

Gustavo Gomez and Joaquin Piquerez will both miss this match due to suspension, while Murilo is struggling with an injury.

Chelsea

Results so far:
Group Stage: Chelsea – LAFC: 2-0
Group Stage: Flamengo – Chelsea: 3-1
Group Stage: ES Tunis – Chelsea: 0-3
Round of 16: Benfica – Chelsea: 1-4

Chelsea have had a mixed experience so far in the Club WC, having lost to Flamengo but still finding themselves being favourites in the quarter-finals facing Palmeiras.

Moises Caicedo will miss out due to suspension, which is a big blow for Chelsea considering his form in the tournament so far. Nicolas Jackson returns from suspension, having missed two games due to his red card in their defeat to Flamengo. New signing Delap might get the nod here, though, having impressed in his first outings for his new club.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of Fluminense – Al-Hilal.

PSG vs. Bayern Munich

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Saturday @ 18:00

PSG

Results so far:
Group Stage: PSG – Atlético Madrid: 4-0
Group Stage: PSG – Botafogo: 0-1
Group Stage: Seattle Sounders – PSG: 0-2
Round of 16: PSG – Inter Miami: 4-0

PSG have been on fire lately, and despite their group stage loss to Botafogo, they’re favourites in this all-European quarter-final clash. Having recently won the CL for the first time in the club’s history, manager Luis Enrique is now hoping the likes of Barcola, Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha can take the club to another big title.

The PSG manager can prepare for this match with no serious injuries or suspensions hampering his selection, and he will be optimistic about his team’s chances, despite Bayern Munich’s accolades.

Bayern Munich

Results so far:
Group Stage: Bayern Munich – Auckland FC: 10-0
Group Stage: Bayern Munich – Boca Juniors: 2-1
Group Stage: Benfica – Bayern Munich: 1-0
Round of 16: Flamengo – Bayern Munich: 2-4

Bayern Munich go into this match as underdogs, but the German side are capable of beating any opponent on a good day. Kompany’s team don’t have the same amount of injury worries as Real Madrid, with only Alphonso Davies out with an injury, although that is old news.

Their 10-0 win over Auckland FC in their opening match was quite the start to the tournament, but PSG will be a completely different task, and the Germans will have to be at their best if they are to qualify for the semi-finals.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of Real Madrid – Borussia Dortmund.

Real Madrid vs. Borussia Dortmund

MetLife Stadium, Saturday @ 22:00 CET

Real Madrid

Results so far:
Group Stage: Real Madrid – Al-Hilal: 1-1
Group Stage: Real Madrid – Pachuca: 3-1
Group Stage: RB Salzburg – Real Madrid: 0-3
Round of 16: Real Madrid – Juventus: 1-0

Real Madrid couldn’t get the win in their opening match, drawing 1-1 against fellow quarter-finalists Al-Hilal, but the Spaniards have looked stronger as the tournament has progressed. They were in total control against Juventus, with the Italians lucky to only lose by one goal.

Their #9 is back after having come on as a sub in their Round of 16 match, but Endrick, Alaba, Mendy, and Camavinga are all missing from the squad due to injuries.

Borussia Dortmund

Results so far:
Group Stage: Fluminense – Borussia Dortmund: 0-0
Group Stage: Mamelodi Sundowns – Borussia Dortmund: 3-4
Group Stage: Borussia Dortmund – Ulsan: 1-0
Round of 16: Borussia Dortmund – Monterrey: 2-1

For everyone hoping for a Bellingham duel, this will have to wait, as Jobe Bellingham got a yellow card leading to a suspension ahead of this quarter-final fixture. Other than that, only Bynoe-Gittens seems to be a question mark ahead of this one. Borussia Dortmund have yet to lose in the tournament so far, but this just might be too big a task for them at this stage.

The winner of this quarter-final will face the winner of PSG – Bayern Munich.
