European Football Update
We’re entering November, and with about a quarter of the big domestic football seasons played, let’s take a look at the standings in some of Europe’s biggest football leagues! We took at closer look at the PL a few weeks back, so in this article, we’ll focus on Italy, Spain, Germany and France. Spain – Can anyone stop Real Madrid?
Top 5
- Real Madrid – 27 Points
- Barcelona – 22 Points
- Villarreal – 20 Points
- Atlético Madrid – 19 Points
- Espanyol – 18 Points
Real Madrid have taken command in Spain, with Xabi Alonso’s team having won 9 of their 10 matches so far, their only loss coming against their city rivals Atlético Madrid, who hammered them 5-2 in late September. Real Madrid’s recent 2-1 win over Barcelona cemented them as favourites for the title this season. Real Madrid to win the league is currently at 1.40, with Barcelona at 3.25. Next on the list is Atlético Madrid at 35.00.
Barcelona started the season well, but they’ve now lost two of their last three league matches, including a 4-1 loss away at Sevilla. Their next league matches are against Elche (H), Celta Vigo (A) and Athletic (H), so the Barcelona supporters will be hoping to see things turn around in the upcoming matches.
Villarreal have had a good start to the season, and are currently at 1.60 to finish top 4, with Athletic at 3.95.
At the other end of the standings, Girona are bottom of the table with 7 points, the same as Oviedo, and with four teams all on 9 points, Levante, Mallorca, Real Sociedad and Valencia. Real Oviedo are favourites to get relegated at 1.50, with Girona at 1.85 and Levante at 2.48.
Will we see any big surprises in Spain this season or will Real Madrid win the title ahead of last year’s champions from Barcelona?
Italy – Napoli and AS Roma sharing the top spot
Top 5
- Napoli – 21 Points
- Roma – 21 Points
- Inter – 18 Points
- AC Milan – 18 Points
- Como – 16 Points
Reigning champions Napoli have had a strong start this season, winning 7 of their first 9 matches, with AS Roma on the same points, though having lost 2 of their matches. Gasperini arrived in the Italian capital from Atalanta this summer, and despite not scoring too many goals (only 10 goals in 9 matches), they’ve made the most of their goals at least. Both Milano teams have seemed a bit shaky at the start of the season, with both currently on 18 points from their first 9 matches.
Inter are the current odds favourites to win ‘lo Scudetto’ at 2.28, with Napoli slightly behind at 3.55, AC Milan at 5.60 and Roma at 9.40.
Napoli face one of the surprise teams of the season tomorrow, when Como visits Naples, hoping to cause another upset at the top of the standings. Conte’s Napoli are also visiting Roma in a month’s time, which should be an interesting fixture as well. AS Roma face a tough match away at AC Milan this weekend, before facing Udinese and Cremonese in their subsequent league fixtures. Inter are away at Verona this weekend, knowing that at least some of their rivals at the top will be dropping points.
At the bottom of the standings, Pisa, Verona, Fiorentina and Genoa are all without a win so far, with Lecce and Parma having at least secured one win. Verona are odds favourites to go down at 1.57, followed by Lecce (1.72), Genoa (2.20) and Pisa (2.25).
Can Conte’s Napoli win back-to-back titles, or will we see Inter, AC Milan or even AS Roma lift the trophy at the end of the season in Italy?
Germany – Unstoppable Bayern Munich?
Top 5
- Bayern Munich – 24 Points
- RB Leipzig – 19 Points
- VfB Stuttgart – 18 Points
- Borussia Dortmund – 17 Points
- Bayer Leverkusen – 17 Points
8 matches played, 8 wins and a goal difference of 30-4. Can anyone stop Bayern Munich this season? Harry Kane has already scored 12 games in the league this season, twice as much as the second player on the top scorer list, Jonathan Burkardt from Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany seems to have settled in well in the German club, and it would be a brave person who bet against the defending champions to defend their title this season.
Borussia Dortmund are their closest challengers on the odds at 22.00, with Burkardt at 15.00 to become top scorer. Though both the league winner and top scorer seems to be a “done deal”, when it comes to the top 4, here are the current favourites:
Borussia Dortmund – 1.15
Bayer Leverkusen – 1.58
RB Leipzig – 1.65
VfB Stuttgart – 2.55
Heidenheim are odds favourites to go down at 1.50, with Augsburg (2.25), Borussia Mönchengladbach (2.50) and St. Pauli (3.25) also considered likely candidates to go down.
Will Dortmund, Leverkusen and RB Leipzig secure the top 4 spots behind Bayern Munich this season, or will we see any twists and turns this season in Germany?
France – Can Monaco or Marseille cause an upset?
Top 5
- PSG – 21 Points
- Monaco – 20 Points
- Marseille – 19 Points
- Strasbourg – 19 Points
- Lyon – 19 Points
PSG are massive favourites to win the league again at 1.15, but both Monaco and Marseille have shown signs early on that they won’t want to make it easy on the favourites from the French capital.
Marseille are currently at 7.00 to win the league, with Monaco at 19.00 and Lyon at 21.00. PSG have dropped points lately, both to Lorient and Strasbourg (both draws), and they have a few tough fixtures coming up, including Nice, Bayern (in the CL) and Lyon, so Monaco and Marseille will both be keeping an extra eye on their title rivals in the coming weeks. Monaco host PSG at the end of the month, hoping to be close enough to leapfrog them in the standings.
FC Metz have the unfortunate honour of being relegation favourites at 1.33, with Angers (2.20), Auxerre (2.50) and Nantes (2.75) also considered likely relegation candidates.
Can Marseille or Monaco bump PSG down from the top of the standings this season? It seems unlikely, but we’ll be keeping an extra eye on the French league in November with some interesting fixtures coming up!
