Liverpool hopefuls look to Exploit Spurs Crisis
Liverpool welcome Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield on Sunday in a fixture that still carries strong memories for the home supporters. The Reds’ 5–1 victory in this game last season confirmed their 20th English league title and second PL crown, and another dominant performance in this weekend’s match would not be surprising given Tottenham’s current struggles.
Analysis
On April 27, 2025, Liverpool delivered a ruthless display against Tottenham, scoring five goals to secure the championship. While a repeat of those celebrations is not expected this season, the match arrives at a crucial moment for Arne Slot’s side.
Liverpool had begun to regain momentum in the race for CL qualification after three consecutive league wins against Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United. However, that run ended at Molineux on March 3, when Andre scored a deflected stoppage-time winner to give Wolverhampton Wanderers a 2–1 victory.
The Reds responded by gaining revenge in the cup three days later, but their European campaign suffered another setback when they were defeated 1–0 by Galatasaray in the first leg of their CL round-of-16 tie. That result means Liverpool have now lost two of their last three matches in all competitions.
Another defeat in the league would mark Liverpool’s 10th PL loss of the season, something they have not experienced since the 2015–16 campaign. However, Tottenham’s current form suggests the hosts have a favourable opportunity to respond.
Tottenham have taken just one point from a possible 18 in their last six PL matches, the worst record of any team in the division over that period.
Igor Tudor was brought in to stabilise the situation, but results have continued to deteriorate. Tuesday’s defeat in Europe only deepened the crisis.
Tottenham lost 5–2 to Atlético Madrid, leaving their CL hopes hanging by a thread. The defeat also made unwanted history for the club.
Tudor became the first Tottenham manager to lose each of his first four matches in charge, while Spurs have now suffered six consecutive defeats in all competitions for the first time in their history.
The North London side currently sit 16th in the PL, just one point ahead of West Ham United and Nottingham Forest in the relegation battle. Their superior goal difference and West Ham’s meeting with Manchester City should prevent them from dropping into the bottom three this weekend.
Liverpool also hold a clear advantage in recent meetings between the clubs. Tottenham have lost 12 of their last 16 PL matches against the Reds, and another defeat on Sunday would make it 13 losses in 17 meetings.
Team News
Liverpool travelled to Türkiye in midweek without goalkeeper Alisson Becker because of a muscle injury, but Arne Slot hopes the Brazilian will be available for the visit of Tottenham. Federico Chiesa is also expected to return after illness. However, Giovanni Leoni (knee), Conor Bradley (knee), Wataru Endo (ankle) and Alexander Isak (leg) remain unavailable. With the CL second leg against Galatasaray only three days later, Slot could make several changes to his lineup. Florian Wirtz may also be rested as a precaution following a recent back issue.
Tottenham face even greater selection problems. Micky van de Ven is suspended following his red card against Crystal Palace. Cristian Romero and Joao Palhinha are also unavailable after suffering a clash of heads during Tuesday’s match. Yves Bissouma (unspecified injury) is ruled out, while Destiny Udogie (thigh) is not expected to return yet. Conor Gallagher is also a doubt due to illness.
Long-term absentees Lucas Bergvall (ankle), Ben Davies (ankle), Mohammed Kudus (thigh), Rodrigo Bentancur (thigh), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), James Maddison (knee) and Wilson Odobert (knee) remain sidelined.
Tottenham could therefore be without as many as 13 players for their trip to Anfield.
Verdict and Betting Angle
Tottenham have faced a difficult season, not least due to a severe injury crisis that has significantly weakened the squad.
Liverpool have not been flawless in recent weeks, but they remain strong at Anfield and should be able to take advantage of Tottenham’s defensive problems.
Tip: Liverpool to win at 1.29.
