The Gunners to beat the champions?
With Man City and Aston Villa both dropping points yesterday, Arsenal – Liverpool is looking even more interesting than initially expected, and the game was already highly anticipated. A win for Arteta’s men will now take them 8 points clear of their closest rivals with 17 matches to go of the season. Can Liverpool ruin the party for the Arsenal hopefuls in London this evening?
Arsenal – Liverpool
Emirates, Thursday @ 21:00 CET
Arsenal
Arsenal are having a great season so far, topping the PL by 5 points with a game to spare while also sitting top of the League Phase standings in the CL having won all their 6 matches so far. The Londoners are currently at 1.19 to win the PL title, while the defending champions Liverpool are priced at 90.00.
Arsenal come into this match full of confidence, having won their last 5 league matches, their last defeat coming away against Aston Villa back in early December. Their summer signings have proved invaluable for the team, and Arteta is much less dependent on his star players this season than before, with every position on the pitch having at least one solid and reliable back-up. Injuries are always a hassle, but they’re also an inevitable part of football, so having players that can jump straight into the teams seamlessly without the quality dropping is invaluable.
Arsenal’s 3-2 win away at Bournemouth was an important one, with Declan Rice scoring his first brace in the PL, and tonight’s match will be followed by two cup matches before the next league fixture against Nottingham Forest on the 17th of January. Winning this match would put the Gunners in an excellent position to win the title as the season approaches its last third.
Arsenal have won 14 out of 15 matches at home this season and enter this match as clear favourites at 1.60.
Arteta has a fairly healthy squad, though Mosquera is out, Calafiori is a doubt and Havertz might be spared for this one as well, having recently recovered from injury.
Arsenal to win the 1st half is at 2.15, with Trossard and Gyökeres both at 6.00 to score the first goal of the match.
Liverpool
It’s been a tough season for the defending champions from Liverpool, and Arne Slot has been under a great deal of pressure. The Dutch manager even had to deal with a fairly outspoken Salah interview before Christmas, which created a lot of talk concerning the Egyptian’s future at the club.
Surprisingly, Liverpool are on a longer unbeaten streak than Arsenal coming into this match, though their poor start to the season has led them to be too far behind the top teams to be in with any realistic chance of a title challenge. Slot’s team are underdogs at Emirates Stadium this evening, with the odds of a Liverpool win currently at 5.80.
Liverpool’s last loss came all the way back in November when they lost 0-3 at home to Nottingham Forest, but since then they’ve managed to avoid any more defeats, though their 2-2 draw against Fulham certainly was a disappointment considering Gakpo gave them the lead in the 94th minute.
This is the first of many tough games coming up for Liverpool this month, with Marseille (A), Bournemouth (A) and Newcastle (H) just a few of their upcoming fixtures. A win in this match will take them up to 37 points, which is still 6 points behind Man City and Aston Villa, so the focus will have to be on top 4.
Slot isn’t quite as fortunate as Arteta when it comes to team absences, with Salah in Morocco on international duties, Isak out with a long-term injury and Ekitike also struggling with a muscular issue. Leoni and Endo are also out of this fixture.
We’re certainly looking forward to this evening’s match, and our prediction is an Arsenal win at 1.60. Don’t forget that we also have Early Payout on this match, which you can read more about here.
