Transfer Talk: Isak to Liverpool?

Liverpool have already made some impressive moves in the transfer market this summer, and now they might be on the verge of another big signing. Our transfer odds reflects this, with Isak to Liverpool currently at 1.30 – will Liverpool manage to snatch one of Newcastle’s star players this summer?

How would he fit in?

Having already signed Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer, Liverpool aren’t in desperate need of a new striker by any stretch of the imagination. The fact that Isak seems to be determined to leave Newcastle might “force” a move from Liverpool however, and considering the importance of depth in top football these days, it could be a move that pushes them even further towards more trophies.

With Nunez expected to leave, Hugo Ekitike – who scored 15 goals in 33 league games in Germany last season – is expected to be given an important role next season for Liverpool, something the reported fee of around €80 million reflects. Isak can however also make an impact from the wing position with his pace and technique, so having both of them could end up working well for Slot’s team. The Swedish striker’s ability to play in different setups could be a huge advantage for a Liverpool team that looks rich in attacking option.

Is he a must for the squad? No, definitely not, but could he help push them up to yet another level? Absolutely!

Ekitike still a gamble

Despite the French signing’s impressive season for Eintracht Frankfurt last season, he is still new to PL football, and will likely need some time to adjust. While Liverpool surely have done their homework on the striker, you can never be guaranteed a success when signing a player, and even more so when the player has never played in the league or country before.

Considering this, Isak could be considered a “safer” option, having scored 54 PL goals in 86 appearances for Newcastle since his arrival in the PL in 2022. There are never any guarantees in football, but one could argue that a player Liverpool have already faced many times and who has been a star player for a top PL club for a few seasons seems a safer option than a player with zero PL experience.

Split the Pressure

Bringing in the Swedish striker from Newcastle wouldn’t just give them an extra option up front, but it would also take some of the pressure off Ekitike, which might help him get settled in a new club, city and league. Both players are agile and great at taking players on one-on-one, and the French signing is also great at pressing and has a certain unpredictability about him that could make him a fan favourite. However, few positions are as scrutinized in football as the striker position, and a lack of goals early on can do a lot of damage for a striker’s confidence.

Should Liverpool land Isak from Newcastle, Ekitike will have another striker not just to compete with, but also to share the pressure with, and maybe that helps give the French attacked a bit more time to adapt to his new club.

Do you think Liverpool should go all-in on the striker from Newcastle, or could it potentially hamper Ekitike’s start at the club?
