No Hiding Place in the First Leg

Paris Saint-Germain welcome Liverpool to the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, with both sides looking to take control of a finely balanced CL quarter-final. Their last meeting at this stage of the competition offered little separation, with both teams winning away from home before PSG progressed on penalties.

Analysis

This is a matchup built on contrast as much as quality.

PSG come into the first leg with rhythm and confidence. Their recent performances have been convincing, both domestically and in Europe, where they have looked comfortable controlling games and creating chances in numbers. The dismantling of Chelsea in the previous round highlighted how quickly they can turn matches in their favour, particularly when their attacking players find space.

There is also a growing consistency to their play. Results have followed performances, and their unbeaten run against English opposition in recent European matches reflects that.

Liverpool’s situation is less settled. Their European form has held up, but recent domestic results have exposed a lack of stability, especially away from home. The defeat to Manchester City before the break was particularly damaging, both in scoreline and in how the game unfolded.

Even so, Liverpool remain a different proposition in this competition. Their record in quarter-finals is strong, and they have shown in recent seasons that they can navigate difficult ties, even when not at their best.

The key issue may be where the first leg is being played. Away from Anfield, Liverpool have struggled to control games in recent weeks, and against a side like PSG, that lack of control can quickly become costly.

At the same time, meetings between these sides tend to stay close. Last season’s tie was decided by small margins, and there is little to suggest this will be significantly different.

Team News

PSG are without Fabian Ruiz, Quentin Ndjantou and Bradley Barcola, while Senny Mayulu has recently returned to training. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Démbéle are expected to lead the attacking line.

Liverpool travel without Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Wataru Endo, while Alexander Isak is unlikely to start despite stepping up his recovery. Mohamed Salah is available again, with Szoboszlai and Wirtz expected to support the attack from midfield.

Verdict and Betting Angle

PSG have been more consistent in recent weeks and carry a clear threat at home, which gives them a slight advantage in the first leg.

Liverpool’s experience in this competition means they are unlikely to be out of the tie, but their away form suggests they may find it difficult to contain PSG over 90 minutes.

Tip: PSG to win at 1.75.
