Argentina’s title defence resumes in Kansas City on Saturday when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals. Lionel Scaloni’s side are now three wins away from retaining the trophy they lifted four years ago, while Switzerland are attempting to reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

Argentina’s route to the last eight has been anything but comfortable. After needing extra time to overcome tournament debutants Cape Verde in the first knockout round, La Albiceleste found themselves two goals behind against Egypt with little more than 10 minutes remaining in the last 16.
What followed was another reminder of the mentality that has defined this generation of Argentine footballers. Cristian Romero started the comeback before Lionel Messi levelled matters after earlier seeing a penalty saved, and Enzo Fernandez completed a dramatic turnaround late on.
The result extended Argentina’s winning run to 12 matches and underlined their ability to remain dangerous even when performances fall below their usual standards.
Messi continues to lead the Golden Boot race with eight goals despite missing twice from the penalty spot, while the world champions remain unbeaten in this tournament since their opening defeat to Saudi Arabia in Qatar.
Switzerland arrive in Kansas City as clear outsiders, but they have quietly built one of the most consistent campaigns of any side remaining in the competition.
After opening with a disappointing draw against Qatar, Murat Yakin’s men responded with victories over Bosnia & Herzegovina and Canada to finish top of Group B before edging past Algeria and Colombia in the knockout rounds.
Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel proved the hero against Colombia as Switzerland progressed on penalties following a goalless draw in Vancouver.
The Swiss approach has rarely been spectacular, but it has certainly been effective. Yakin’s side are yet to fall behind at any point during the tournament, highlighting the defensive organisation that has become their trademark.
History also favours Argentina, who have never lost to Switzerland and won both previous tournament meetings between the nations.
Team News
Scaloni is expected to have a full squad available for the quarter-final. Messi will once again captain the side, while Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez continue to compete for a place alongside the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in attack.
There is also a decision to make at left-back, where Nicolas Tagliafico and Facundo Medina remain in contention for a starting role.
Switzerland have more concerns heading into the match. Michel Aebischer, Luca Jaquez and Johan Manzambi are all being assessed ahead of kick-off, with the latter particularly doubtful after missing the victory over Colombia with a knee problem.
Ardon Jashari impressed after replacing Manzambi in the starting lineup and could retain his place if required.
Breel Embolo is expected to continue leading the attack despite a quiet display in the previous round.
Odds and Tips
Switzerland have shown throughout the tournament that they are difficult to break down and capable of competing with stronger opponents.
Argentina, however, continue to find solutions in difficult situations and possess the experience and quality required to progress.
