United Momentum Meets Newcastle Pressure

The Red Devils visit Newcastle this evening, hoping for 3 important points. We’ve taken a closer look at the fixture, with the visitors from Manchester very narrow odds favourites. What can the hosts come up with in Newcastle this evening?

Michael Carrick and Manchester United should not be lacking confidence at the moment. Some supporters may even be daring to dream — one in particular has promised to cut his hair if the team reaches five consecutive wins. Victory against Newcastle on Wednesday would represent the third in a row. Regardless, United arrive at St James’ Park aiming to strengthen their hold on third place in the league. Newcastle, meanwhile, are desperate to halt a worrying league run that has seen them lose five of their last six matches.

Analysis

Since January 17, Manchester United have collected 19 points from a possible 21 — a sequence that has strengthened Michael Carrick’s case for being handed the managerial role permanently. Many of the victories have been tight affairs, with four of the six wins coming by a single-goal margin, but the team has shown composure and resilience when matches hang in the balance.

Last weekend United secured a valuable 2–1 victory against Crystal Palace. Trailing at half-time, they turned the match around after the break, aided by Palace being reduced to ten men. Bruno Fernandes continued his productive campaign with another goal involvement — he now has seven goals and 13 assists in the league — while Benjamin Sesko’s decisive header took his tally to seven goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions.

United’s away record may not appear spectacular on paper, but their recent form on the road has been quietly solid. They are unbeaten in their last five league matches away from home, recording two wins and three draws during that stretch.

However, St James’ Park has not been a favourable venue in recent years. Manchester United have not won there since October 2020 and have lost their three most recent visits to Newcastle.

The hosts head into this match following a 3–2 defeat at home to Everton. That result extended a troubling spell for Eddie Howe’s side at St James’ Park, where they have now lost three consecutive league matches, conceding eight goals to Aston Villa, Brentford and Everton.

As a consequence, Newcastle have slipped to 13th place in the PL table. With ten matches remaining, they now sit seven points behind Brentford in seventh position.

There have still been a few positives for Howe. Newcastle have won four of their last six games in all competitions, although two of those victories came against Qarabag FK in European action. The other wins arrived against an Aston Villa side that played more than 45 minutes with ten men and a Tottenham team struggling for form.

Team News

Eddie Howe could make changes to his starting XI. Sven Botman may return in central defence ahead of Dan Burn. Jacob Ramsey was forced off at half-time against Everton due to illness but has trained this week and could be available. Nick Woltemade has also been unwell and remains a doubt; if he is fit, Howe may consider deploying him further forward.

Harvey Barnes is an option on the right wing, while Tino Livramento, Lewis Miley and Bruno Guimaraes remain sidelined through injury.

For Manchester United, Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are doubts after illness, and Shaw also suffered a knock to his foot in the previous match. Noussair Mazraoui is ready to step in if required. Lisandro Martinez is another uncertainty following a calf issue, with Ayden Heaven a potential alternative if Maguire does not feature.

Mason Mount could return to the substitutes’ bench after missing five matches, although Carrick may otherwise keep faith with the same starting lineup.

Verdict and Betting Angle

Newcastle will be determined to end their difficult run at home, but their recent performances provide little indication that they can halt a Manchester United side currently playing with confidence.

Carrick’s team have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to edge tight matches, and with momentum on their side they may once again come out on top.

Tip: Manchester United to win at 2.52.
