Quarter-finals Preview

There’s been plenty of action in Switzerland so far, and with the group stage complete, we’ll take a look at two of the upcoming quarter-finals. England are the reigning champions, and will be hoping to knock Sweden out on Thursday, before Spain play the host nation Friday evening. Let’s take a closer look at these two big matches!

Sweden – England

Stadion Letzigrund, Thursday @ 21:00 CET

Sweden

Results so far:
Group Stage: Denmark – Sweden: 0-1
Group Stage: Poland – Sweden: 0-3
Group Stage: Sweden – Germany 4-1

The Swedes cruised through the group stage, winning all their 3 games, and the latter two of them with relative ease. Sweden won the tournament back in 1984, and will be hoping to go all the way again this year, but first they will have to play last edition’s winner, England.

Sweden will hope their counter-attacking style will lead to a few dangerous opportunities against an England team that have grown throughout the tournament after they lost their opening match to France.

Stina Blackstenius, who recently scored the winning goal in Arsenal’s surprise win in the CL final against Barcelona, will be hoping to get on the scoresheet again. Both her and Lina Hurtig have two goals so far in the tournament, while Asllani, Kaneryd and Rolfö will also be hoping to make an impact here.

England

Results so far:
Group Stage: France – England: 2-1
Group Stage: England – Netherlands: 4-0
Group Stage: England – Wales: 6-1

England are defending champions, and their emphatic 6-1 win over Wales will certainly turn a few heads, despite Wales not being the strongest opponent.

Stanway, Ella Toone and Lauren James have all scored two goals in the tournament so far, and manager Wiegman have plenty of good attacking options at her disposal. Alessia Russo, also part of Arsenal’s CL success this season, will be hoping to add to her single goal in the tournament so far, while Leah Williamson and Lucy Bronze are expected to tighten things up at the back.

England are favourites in this game, but this Sweden team looks like it can beat any team on a good day, so Thursday’s fixture should be a thrilling one!

Spain – Switzerland

Wankdorf Stadium, Friday @ 21:00

Spain

Results so far:
Group Stage: Spain – Portugal: 5-0
Group Stage: Spain – Belgium: 6-2
Group Stage: Italy – Spain: 1-3

Spain are defending world champions and clear favourites to lift the trophy in Switzerland this summer. They went through the group stage without any major problems, winning all three games.

Esther González is is the current top scorer of the tournament with 4 goals, followed by Alexia at 3. They’re both hoping to add to their goal tallies against Switzerland while guiding their team to the semi-final. This Spain team boasts plenty of additional potential goalscorers, including Mariona, Athenea and Pina, and Switzerland will be expected to spend a lot of this match defending their goal.

Spain are clear favourites going into this game, with Switzerland probably happy enough to have qualified from the group stage.

Switzerland

Results so far:
Group Stage: Switzerland – Norway: 1-2
Group Stage: Switzerland – Iceland: 2-0
Group Stage: Finland – Switzerland: 1-1

Switzerland lost their opening match of the tournament, but managed to qualify for the quarter-finals thanks to a win against Iceland and a late equalizer against Finland in the last game of the group stage. They won’t be expected to give Spain too much of a fight in this one, but they will be hoping their home supporters can help spur them on to a historical night against the current world champions.

Key players for Switzerland include Reuteler and Riesen, and they’ll both need to be at their best if Switzerland are to cause any problems for Spain on Friday.
