Tournament Preview: Group H

Group H brings together one of Europe’s leading contenders, one of South America’s most experienced tournament teams, an ambitious Saudi Arabia side and tournament debutants Cape Verde. Let’s take a closer look at Group H in this summer’s big tournament!

Spain enter the section as overwhelming favourites, but the fight behind them for qualification could still provide plenty of intrigue.

Uruguay’s pedigree and individual quality make them strong contenders to progress, while Saudi Arabia will hope to build on the confidence gained from recent tournaments. Cape Verde, meanwhile, arrive with nothing to lose and an opportunity to make history on the biggest stage for the first time.

With contrasting styles and several teams carrying genuine belief, Group H could become far more competitive than it initially appears on paper.

Cape Verde

Cape Verde prepare for the most significant moment in the nation’s football history as they make their first-ever tournament appearance.

The Blue Sharks earned qualification by finishing ahead of Cameroon in their qualifying group, a reminder that they are capable of competing with more established football nations when at their best. Recent victories against sides such as Ghana and Cameroon have also shown they possess resilience and organisation capable of frustrating stronger opponents.

Much of the spotlight falls on Benfica midfielder Sidney Lopes Cabral, but the tournament also represents a chance for new national heroes to emerge on the global stage.

Although Cape Verde enter Group H as outsiders, they are unlikely to be overawed by the occasion. With freedom from expectation and a strong collective spirit, they will target the possibility of claiming a memorable result during their debut campaign.

Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia arrive at another edition of the tournament carrying valuable experience after becoming regular participants at the tournament in recent decades.

Their famous victory over Argentina in the 2022 edition of the tournament remains one of the competition’s greatest modern shocks and demonstrated exactly what the team can achieve when confidence and organisation come together. Several members of that squad remain central figures heading into this tournament.

The rapid growth of the Saudi Pro League has also increased the level of competition and exposure for many domestic-based players, helping strengthen the national side ahead of the finals.

While Saudi Arabia are not viewed among the favourites to progress from the group, they possess enough experience and belief to challenge for qualification if they can reproduce the intensity and discipline shown in previous tournaments.

Spain

Spain head into the tournament as one of the strongest teams in the competition and clear favourites to top Group H.

The reigning European champions continue to blend technical quality, tactical control and emerging young talent under a squad packed with world-class players. Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Pedri and Marcos Llorente are among the standout names expected to lead Spain’s challenge in North America.

Since their defeat to Scotland in qualifying during 2023, Spain have consistently produced high-level performances and arrive at the tournament carrying impressive momentum. Their only competitive setback since then came in the NL final defeat to Portugal on penalties.

Spain’s objective extends far beyond simply winning the group. With a talented and balanced squad, they will expect to challenge seriously for the title and continue the success they enjoyed in Germany back in 2024.

Anything less than a strong run deep into the knockout stages would likely be viewed as a disappointment.

Uruguay

Uruguay complete the group as one of South America’s most dangerous and experienced tournament sides.

Marcelo Bielsa has assembled a squad packed with high-level talent, combining intensity, technical quality and physicality throughout the pitch. Federico Valverde remains one of the team’s key figures in midfield, while Darwin Nunez and Manuel Ugarte add further quality and energy to the side.

Although recent results have occasionally been inconsistent, Uruguay’s history at major tournaments ensures they are never a team to underestimate. The two-time world champions have repeatedly shown an ability to rise to the occasion when the stakes are highest.

The expectation will be to qualify comfortably for the knockout rounds, and if Bielsa’s side can find momentum early in the tournament, they could become one of the more dangerous teams outside the traditional favourites.

Conclusion

Spain enter Group H as clear favourites and possess the depth and quality expected of a serious contender to win the tournament. Uruguay also look well positioned to challenge strongly for qualification thanks to their experienced squad and proven tournament mentality.

Saudi Arabia remain capable of surprising stronger opponents, particularly given their recent tournament experience, while Cape Verde’s debut appearance gives them the freedom to play without pressure.

Although Spain appear dominant on paper, the race for the remaining qualification places could still produce several tense and unpredictable encounters throughout the group stage.
